California Crusin' with Max

Today Maxy took his first ride on a bicycle! At the onset, I wasn't sure if he would like the idea of being pedaled around in a basket. Max is the kind of guy who likes to be in control, call the shots, that sorta thing. But much to my delight, Maxy immediately took to his basket!

Tucked in his blanket, he happily perched to watch the world as it passed by; his ears sticking straight in the air, perceptive to his surroundings, Max loved to see (and be taller than) the doggies we passed.

After we arrived home from our ride, Max was a little reluctant to get out of the basket. He really seemed to take a shining to whole bicycle riding experience. Tomorrow morning, we hit the road for some more cruisin =)

Max for Bbeauty Designs

Max recently had a photo shoot with Bbeauty Designs, a designer located in Morgan Hill, California. Bbeauty Designs specializes in handcrafted, made-to-order pet clothes, hats, bandannas and beds.

The shoot took place at the design studio and was a lot of fun. They had plenty of treats for Max, so he was super attentive, though not use to the heat of all the studio lights.

In Max's shoot, he wore a plaid jacket with a fur collar, a fancy black sweater, a reversible bandanna, an eight panel cap, and a scarf.

We were surprised we could get Max to wear this hat. He doesn't so happy in this photo, but he wore it nonetheless... at least for a few seconds ;)

Max was such a trooper and was great during the shoot, but was definitely ready to get home and take a nap!

Another trip to Banfield

On Monday morning, I noticed that little Maxy was not feeling so well. He appeared to have an upset tummy. He seemed to get better throughout the day, but was sick throughout the night. On Tuesday morning, I look him to see Dr. Rao at Banfield Pet Hospital. Hoping it was not another case of pancreatitis, I had to leave him for blood work and monitoring.

After a series of tests, the doctors could not determine what was wrong. They put him on an IV for the day to help him regain his fluids.

When I picked him up he seemed to have more energy, but still seemed a little sicky... so I got him a new bed to make him more comfortable :)

As strange as it sounds, Dr. Rao prescribed 2.5 mg of Pepcid AC for stomach acid, and Pedialyte to help restore his electrolytes. She also put Max back on the percription food.

Much to my surprise, Max enjoyed the orange-flavored Pedialyte and even ate his new food. He seems to be feeling a lot better, but still is not 100% back to normal.

Hopefully he'll be back to chasing squirrels again soon!

Tips For Protecting Your Pet In The Chilly Weather

Don't drop the ball when the temperature drops. Use these easy tips to keep your pet warm and safe during the chilly winter months.

Don't forget to provide adequate shelter and snacks
Remember that Pets need adequate shelter from wind and rain when the temperatures drop. Older, chronically ill or debilitated Pets may have more difficulty during cold weather. While the best course of action is to leave your Pet inside during cold weather, if you must leave your Pet outdoors, increase his or her food intake. When Pets are exposed to cold weather, they require extra calories to stay warm.

Freezing temps call for a slumber party - Bring in the doggies!
Pets are safer indoors in freezing weather. Dogs need outside exercise but only for limited periods – be attentive to body temperature and limit time outdoors, especially to prevent frostbite on ears and feet. If you suspect frostbite, seek veterinary attention.

An icy water bowl is no fun for anyone
Cold temperatures can freeze drinking water left outdoors. Your Pet can also damage his or her paws trying to break through icy surfaces. In freezing temperatures, you need to check the water frequently or purchase a heater for your Pet's water bowl.

Antifreeze, the attractive nuisance
Regular antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is attractive to Pets because it has a sweet taste. Even in very small quantities, the ingestion of antifreeze can be fatal. Licking antifreeze off the floor of the garage is enough to be dangerous. Check your car for coolant leaks and clean up spilled antifreeze immediately. Optimally, use antifreeze-coolant made with propylene glycol, which won't hurt Pets, wildlife or family members.

Check for chilly kitties before starting your engine
Cats may climb onto vehicle engines seeking warmth during cold weather. Severe, sometimes fatal injuries can result from being struck by a moving fan belt. Be sure to knock on or check under the hood before starting your vehicle and honk the horn to startle any Pets who may have sought shelter underneath your vehicle.

Pet-friendly de-icing is a must
The salt and other chemicals used to melt snow and ice may irritate the pads of your Pet's feet. Wipe the feet with a damp towel every time when coming in from outdoors – even if you don't see salt on the walkways. Many pet stores sells a pet-friendly de-icing product that is safe for use around Pets or young children.

Indoor Pets may need some extra monitoring too
Some Pets, such as reptiles or tropical fish may be temperature-sensitive to cold air. Pay attention to room temperatures to ensure that these Pets don't get chilled. Also, bundle up your babies if they are cold. Remember, hot air rises so your pup may get chilly. Put a sweater on him, or give him an extra blankie for those cold nights!

Max, The Karate Dog: Howl-I-Ween Costume

This year, I decided I would roll up my sleeves and make a cute little Howl-I-Ween costume for Max. I had no idea what Max would be, so I went to the local thrift shop to browse for ideas. I came across a white pair of scrubs and a black fabric belt. Three dollars later, I was on my way home to start my craft project.

I measured down Max's back, then I cut the bottom of the pants. Then I cut the pant leg open, along the seam. I measured from arm to arm, over Max's back. I then measured the cloth and make little slits for Max's arms.

Now I have a little white jacket for Max, which is fully customizable. I decided to make him into a little Karate Dog. So I printed a Chinese War sign (which is used on many Karate gees) from the web. I traced the sign on the back center of the coat with a black fine point sharpie and filled it in with a thick sharpie.

Then I measured around Max's belly and cut the black belt. I tied the black belt around his belly and slid the knot to the front.

Max's 3rd Birthday was a great success! All of his bestest puppy buddies in the Bay came to visit and play. This year, as most of you know, it was Vegas-inspired and fabulous!

Max was lucky enough to have a floral dog created and donated by Geraldine's Event Planning in San Jose, California. As you can see, the floral dog was a dealer at the poker game. It was perfectly adorable!

We also had a Vegas buffet and everyone's favorite, pupcakes! Pupcakes are a spice cake base with carrots and a yummy cream cheese icing! Who can say no to those!

Max Visits Sausalito, California

Hi everyone! I know it has been a while, but we are back to blogging :)

A couple weeks ago we took Max to Sausalito, California for a day trip. Sausalito, which means "little willow" is situated on the northeast end of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County. It is a beautiful little town that combines hillside with shoreline, and best of all, Sausalito is very dog-friendly!

We had lunch on the shore and Max enjoyed watching the birds. It is a great weekend getaway for anyone who is visiting the Bay Area.

After a fun-filled day in Sausalito, Max had a date with Lilo, the maltese.

Party Planning for a Vegas-Themed Birthday Pawty

It's almost that time again... MAX'S BIRTHDAY! Which means, let the party planning begin. Max loves to throw fun birthday parties which include playtime and great treats and gift bags for the puppies, and food and fun for the humans as well.

In the past, we have had luau and cowboys & indians pawties. This year, we're going Vegas, baby! Casino Royale!

This year Max is turning 3 in doggie years, which means 21 in human years. So we have decided to go with a Vegas theme for our little high roller!

Does anyone have ideas as to what goes into a Vegas-themed paw-ty? We are planning a Vegas-inspired buffet dinner and Paw-tinis for the humans.

We will definitely make pupcakes for the puppies. Can you think of any decorations, food, or other goodies that are a must???

Summer Safety Tips for Your Pet

As summer quickly approaches, there are a few tips to keep in mind to keep your pet healthy and happy.

Never leave your pet in the car. Though you may only be running a quick errand, it only takes a few minutes for your pet to overheat. Even if it feels cool outside and your windows are down, the sun can raise the temperature inside your car to over 120 F in a matter of minutes. I know it is difficult for those of you who, like me, like to take your baby everywhere with you. However, your pet will be much happier and safer at home in a temperature controlled environment.

Provide ample water. Water should always be accessible to your pet. Even if you only put out food once or twice a day, be sure to always have water available. We always have at least two water bowls available for Max just in case. And if you plan to go on a car trip or other outdoor activity, don't depend on alternative water sources. Be sure to take your own water and bowl. Pets are often more comfortable drinking out of their own dish and will be more likely to stay hydrated.

Be careful when cutting. Before you get your dog that "high and tight" summer haircut, talk to your vet or groomer to determine if your pet is likely to get a sunburn. Some pets, particularly those with light skin and hair, are prone to sunburns. Sunburns effect pets in the same way they do humans: pain, peeling, itching and even the increased likelihood of skin cancer. If you decide to go with the short cut, as we do with Max, you may want to layer him in a light-weight shirt when going out in the sun.

Don't let your pet overdo it. Though exercise is important to all pets, make sure your pet doesn't overexert himself. This could lead to your pet being overheated, and thus a heatstroke. So long as your pet is a healthy weight, this shouldn't be much of a problem. But if your pet begins to pant uncontrollably, then it is time to rest. If your pet does have a heatstroke, place cool, wet towels on hairless parts of the body, such as the belly, and call your vet immediately.

Tornado Takes Life: Tragedy Befalls Sweet Daisy

This past weekend Max and I jet-set to Missouri to surprise my mom for Mother’s Day. She was fabulously surprised and we had a wonderful time spending time with our family, pet and humans alike. That is, until tragedy struck.

As some of you may know, Spring is also tornado season in the Midwest. On Saturday afternoon, an F4 to F5 tornado blew threw Missouri and Oklahoma killing 23 people and injuring hundreds. In fact, it wiped one entire town off the map!

Our dear friend, Kendra, (who you may remember from our January Pet Puff recipe post) was out of town and had boarded her two dogs, Daisy and Diesel, at a local boarding facility. Kendra and her family rushed back home to check on their dogs, sadly to find that the boarding facility was destroyed by the tornado!

Kendra found Daisy and Diesel and rushed them to the emergency room. Diesel, the miniature poodle, was only a little bumped and bruised. However, sweet Daisy wasn’t that lucky. Daisy had swelling around the heart from the trauma of the twister.

The next morning Kendra woke up to find Daisy in an even worse condition. She phoned her mom and the two headed to the emergency room. But before they could make it, sweet Daisy died in Kendra’s arms.

Paw-tography: How to Snap the Best Pictures of Your Pooch

Go Digital - Digital cameras are the best! You may have to take 30 pictures before you find that one that grabs your eye. Keep snapping! Go for quantity... there is bound to be a good one!

Lighting - Use natural lighting when possible, be it indoor or outdoors. The flash generally causes most animals to have red eye, which is nearly impossible to correct (even in Photoshop). Avoid the entire problem by using natural light. This will also capture the truest color of your pet's fur, while not frightening with the flash.

Shutter Speed - Set your shutter speed to a fast enough setting to capture a moving animal, as we all know movement is inevitable when taking pictures. Check your camera manual to determine if you have a setting called "AI Servo AF." This setting will continuously re-focus on the subject as it moves. After setting your camera to AI Servo AF you then focus on your moving dog by pressing the shutter button half way down. Keep the AF point on the dog and the focus will remain continuous. Sometime the candid photos are the best, and you certainly don't want to miss out on that jump, spin, or roll!

Location, Location, Location - Choose a location where your pet is comfortable. If your pet is use to spending most of his day inside your home, then try for an indoor photoshoot. If your dog loves the backyard, shoot outside. Sometimes the best photos are when your pet is the most comfortable and relaxed. Don't force it... it just won't work!

Go to Them - Since you can't expect your pet to know what is going on when you start pointing a shiny metal device at them, you certainly can't expect them to know what to do. Go to your pet. So many times we only think to snap the shots from the easiest position for us, standing up. If he is sitting on a chair, try getting down to eye level with him for a good close up. Even try to shoot from down up. Work with different angles to get the dog's eye view instead of just the bird's eye view.

Use Basic Commands - If your pet knows basic commands like sit and stay be sure to use these commands. If there is a trigger word that your pet knows, feel free to use it too... just don't over do it or your pet will ignore you in the future. As for Max, when we say "Do you wanna..." or "Outside?" his ears perk up and he tilts his head to the side, which we think is pretty cute. However, this only works for a few shots. Otherwise, he realizes "these people aren't taking me out, they are tricking me!" At which time, he totally tunes us out.

Eye contact and perky ears... Max is definitely ready to go outside!

Treats - When your pet starts to tune you out, you can always use the treat technique. Request a command, with treat in hand. If you are trying to get eye contact, simply hold the treat near the lens and the photo will appear as if he is looking straight into the camera. This is especially helpful when using a prop or posing your pet. Just don't overdo this one either, or your little guy will end up with the tummy ache!

Plan it Out - Try to pick a time when your dog is relaxed. After Max's baths he is wild and crazy. This would be the worst time for us to try to snap a shot because he just doesn't stand still. Rather we pick a time after a walk or play group when Max is relaxed and maybe even a little sleepy.

Be Patient - Not only do you have to be patient, but you have to be prepared. Some days I wish I could just have my camera in hand all day because I want to catch a shot of him jumping or yawning. You can't exactly force your pet into posing, but you can be ready for his next cute move.

Pancreatitis: More Than Just a Tummy Ache

On Wednesday night, little Max had a tummy ache. At first, we just thought he had eaten a little grass or something that caused him to have diarrhea, but when it continued every few hours until morning, we knew it was something more severe.

We rushed Max to the hospital and he endured a series of tests to determine the cause. The doctor's findings... Pancreatitis. Alarmed and worried, I had to fully research pancreatitis as we nearly dismissed the ailment as a tummy ache. I thought I would pass my research on to you, as it can affect all dogs and is quite severe.

What does the Pancreas do?
The pancreas is a glandular organ that is located under the stomach and duodenum (first part of the small intestine) in the dog and cat. The functions of the pancreas are 1) exocrine, which produces the enzymes needed to digest food, and 2) endocrine, which produces hormones, including the hormone insulin, which facilitates the uptake and storage of glucose (sugar) and amino acids (proteins).

What is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, causing leakage of the digestive enzymes whereby the pancreas literally starts to "digest itself."

What Causes Pancreatitis?
The cause of pancreatitis in dogs is not well understood at this point. There are a few things that predispose dogs to the development of pancreatitis, including: high fat content in blood (hyperlipidemia), high fat diet, obesity, certain medicines, underlying diseases, bacterial or viral infection, and trauma; however, there is also some research that indicates there are genetic factors at play as well.

What are the signs of Pancreatitis?
The problem with Pancreatitis is that it often just shows itself by diarrhea or vomiting, which taken by itself may not initially cause worry. Additionally, dogs with pancreatitis may be depressed, lose their appetite, and may also exhibit pain in the abdomen (restlessness, panting or unwillingness to lie down).

How do you Treat Pancreatitis?
Treatment generally involves the withdrawal of food and water for at least 48 hours. This allows the gastrointestinal system to rest, which makes the swelling of the pancreas go down. Depending on the severity of each case, and the dog may have to be on intravenous fluids and other support to heal the pancreas while off of oral food and water.

Max's Prognosis:
Max's pancreatitis apparently came from a protozoa he had, likely due to eating something he found outside that was infected. He spent all day Thursday in the hospital on an IV with fluids and antibiotics. He got to spend the night at home on Thursday night, but had to leave his catheter in tact for his subsequent IV treatments.

A little rest and relaxation for Max

He is back in the hospital today with another full day of IV fluids and antibiotics. The doctor says he should be fine and is glad we came in when we did. Left untreated even for a few days, this could have caused Max's organs to stop functioning.

Max is now on a low fat diet and will start eating Royal Canin upon his return from the hospital. Absolutely no more "people food" for Max and even his doggie treats must be carefully monitored.

Spring Showers Bring May Flowers: Forbidden Flora

As spring is quickly approaching, as too are the beautiful flowers and plants! However, as beautiful as they may seem to us, they may be potentially harmful to your dog. Here is a list of potentially poisonous plants, and the effects they may cause to your pet that I found on the ASPCA website that I though would be helpful.

Plants and Flowers to Avoid:

Lilies: Members of the Lilium spp. are considered to be highly toxic to cats, but to be safe, monitor your pup around these too. While the poisonous component has not yet been identified, it is clear that with even ingestions of very small amounts of the plant, severe kidney damage could result.

Sago Palm: All parts of Cycas Revoluta are poisonous, but the seeds or “nuts” contain the largest amount of toxin. The ingestion of just one or two seeds can result in very serious effects, which include vomiting, diarrhea, depression, seizures and liver failure.

Tulip/Narcissus bulbs: The bulb portions of Tulipa/Narcissus spp. contain toxins that can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation, drooling, loss of appetite, depression of the central nervous system, convulsions and cardiac abnormalities.

Azalea/Rhododendron: Members of the Rhododenron spp. contain substances known as grayantoxins, which can produce vomiting, drooling, diarrhea, weakness and depression of the central nervous system in animals. Severe azalea poisoning could ultimately lead to coma and death from cardiovascular collapse.

Oleander: All parts of Nerium oleander are considered to be toxic, as they contain cardiac glycosides that have the potential to cause serious effects—including gastrointestinal tract irritation, abnormal heart function, hypothermia and even death.

Castor Bean: The poisonous principle in Ricinus communis is ricin, a highly toxic protein that can produce severe abdominal pain, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, weakness and loss of appetite. Severe cases of poisoning can result in dehydration, muscle twitching, tremors, seizures, coma and death.

Cyclamen: Cylamen species contain cyclamine, but the highest concentration of this toxic component is typically located in the root portion of the plant. If consumed, Cylamen can produce significant gastrointestinal irritation, including intense vomiting. Fatalities have also been reported in some cases.

Kalanchoe: This plant contains components that can produce gastrointestinal irritation, as well as those that are toxic to the heart, and can seriously affect cardiac rhythm and rate.

Amaryllis: Common garden plants popular around Easter, Amaryllis species contain toxins that can cause vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, anorexia and tremors.

Autumn Crocus: Ingestion of Colchicum autumnale by pets can result in oral irritation, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, shock, multi-organ damage and bone marrow suppression.

Chrysanthemum: These popular blooms are part of the Compositae family, which contain pyrethrins that may produce gastrointestinal upset, including drooling, vomiting and diarrhea, if eaten. In certain cases depression and loss of coordination may also develop if enough of any part of the plant is consumed.

Pothos: Pothos (both Scindapsus and Epipremnum) belongs to the Araceae family. If chewed or ingested, this popular household plant can cause significant mechanical irritation and swelling of the oral tissues and other parts of the gastrointestinal tract.

Schefflera: Schefflera and Brassaia actinophylla contain calcium oxalate crystals that can cause oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty in swallowing and intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips and tongue in pets who ingest.

"Max is a great addition to our family," Polston said. "He is energetic and always happy, traits which I aspire to have as well."

When Max turned 1, she and Bakshi invited friends over for a luau-themed birthday party. All the four-legged guests received Hawaiian-print bandanas with their names embroidered on them.

February: Dental Health Month

February is pet dental health month, and I was appalled to learn that 70% of dogs have an onset of dental disease by the age of three. With little Max coming on age three in just a few months, this was a real eye-opener for me.

Here are some facts that can help you prevent oral diseases:

It is important to brush your pet's teeth at least once a week.
You can use either a brush or your finger in a circular motion, about 30 seconds on each side.
If you pet hates the toothbrush, try placing a little dab of toothpaste on their nose or paw and let them lick it off to allow them to get use to the flavor.
Do not use human toothpaste, as it has detergents that can cause pets to become ill.

If your pet does not want to eat, or does not want to clean himself, it may be because of mouth pain associated with an oral disease. Non-customary drooling is also a sign of oral disease. If your pet has these symptoms, make sure your vet checks this out.

Pet Puff Treat Recipe

Max would first like to thank Kendra and her lovable puppies, Daisy and Diesel, for sharing this delightful recipe with him over the holidays. Max and his sisters, Jules and Seancey, had such a fun time opening their pressies in the mail, and loved munching on the snacks!

Kendra has shared her extra yummy treat recipe with us, and we would like to share it with all of our fellow bloggers!

Pet Puffs

Ingredients:
1 package Dry yeast
1/4 cup Warm water(110-115F.)
1 1/2 cups Whole wheat flour
1 cup All-Purpose flour
1 package Unflavored gelatin
1 cup Non-fat dry milk powder
1/4 cup Corn oil
1 Egg
1 Can pet food -- (6 to 8 oz)
1/4 cup Water

Instructions:
Dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water. Mix dry ingredients. Add all ingredients together. (Dough will be very stiff; it may be necessary to mix with your hands.) Drop dough by level half-teaspoons onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 300F. oven 25 minutes.

Not only does Maxy love these, but they are healthy too! So do your pup a favor and make him a treat soon!

Travel Tips for a Smooth Sailing Trip

Maxy and I just finished our daylong trek from sunny California to the frigid Midwest. We left home at about 4am and Max slept through the long lines at the airport. During our layover he mad a little buddy Abby the Schnauzer, who was also headed to Kansas City.

Max just just loves stealing the attention when he prances off the airplane! After we landed he finally got to play with his sisters on the farm. Maxy is definitely ready for Christmas... atleast the turkey!

Make sure your dog’s collar and tags are secure: Before leaving on your trip, make sure your dog’s collar fits properly and its tags are up to date with your current phone number and rabies information. Adding your cell phone number to the dog’s tag is also a good idea if Rover runs away during the trip, since you won’t be at home to receive any calls.

Holiday Food Delimma: Foods Your Dog Should Avoid

Regardless how many times I hear or read that it is bad to feed your dog table food, once in a while I give in. Although we all hate being a victim of the sad puppy eyes while we are eating, there are certain foods that are completely off limits to dogs. These foods include:

Chocolate - Acts as a stimulant and can cause cardiac arrest
Grapes/Raisins - Cause problems for kidneys and digestive system
Onions - Breaks down red blood cells and deprives cells of oxygen
Macadamia Nuts - Can cause fever, irregular heartbeat, seizures, or mild paralysis
Alcohol - Extremely susceptible to alcohol poisoning
Bread dough - Dog's body heat causes dough to rise in stomach and could rupture stomach; also releases alcohol compounds, which is detrimental
Caffeinated Beverages - Acts as a stimulant and can cause increased heart rate, causing seizures or heart attacks
Avocados - Damages heart, lung, and other essential tissues
Pitted Fruits (Peaches, Pears, Cherries, and Apricots) - pits of these fruits contain small doses of cyanide
Raw Fish - May contain parasites which attach to your dog's intestines causing symptoms similar to those of distemper or parvo
Milk and other dairy products - A large number of dogs are lactose intolerant
Mushrooms - May contain toxins causing shock to the dog's system
Salt - A little is okay, but too much can cause electrolyte imbalances
Xylitol - An artificial sweetener that can cause hypoglycemia
Chicken Bones - Especially cooked bones are brittle and can break off and puncture the stomach or esophagus
Turkey skin/Ham fat - Too much fat can cause pancreatitis; When a dog eats a high-fat meal, its pancreas overproduces enzymes, to the extent that they actually begin to "digest" the pancreas and inflame it

No raw fish for Max... only toys!

This is just something to think about during the holiday season, as your guests may think it is cute to feed your puppy table food. Some options are keeping your dog in another room while the food is being served, or asking your guests not to feed your dog table food because it could make him sick. Try to feed your puppy before the dinner so he is not begging for food!

Also be sure to check the floor to make sure no food was dropped and in the dog's reach. Make sure all trash is out of reach as well. Last year my parent's yorkie knocked over the trash can and had a merry time digging the garbage!

Treating your puppy to part of your holiday feast is fine, but make sure you limit the amount, and refrain from too much fat.

This week I have chosen the Cetacea Drag-Free Leash to review. After getting my fingers tangled in the retractable leashes or dropping them because of the small handle, I moved on the the Cetacea Drag-Free Leash.

This leash is about 3 feet in length and has a large opening for your hand. It is made of material similar to a phone cord, which allows the leash to expand to up to 8 feet in length. This is perfect for jogging because rarely do Max and I stay on the same step. It is called a Drag-Free leash because the coil design allows for it to pick up slack when your dog is closer to you, without dragging on the ground.

Great for outdoor dining

We have used this leash for several months now and there are no signs of wear. The cord is still very well in tact and has not once tangled and the material webbing housing the cord looks just like new.

It is also handy because you can loop your key ring through the hand strap when you are out for a walk. The leash itself can also be looped around the back support of your car seat to secure your dog while you are driving.

I always get compliments on this leash when Max and I are out for a walk or shopping. It is a beautiful design, with brass fixtures and colorful fabric.

Pet Insurance: Do you really need it?

Most pet owners do not really consider pet insurance until the day they are faced with a hefty vet bill, at which time, it is too late. I have to admit, I am one of those people. Though we have not been faced with outrageous vet bills, pet insurance is one of those things I have just put on the back burner for some time now.

However, Max was feeling a bit under the weather yesterday and I started considering it more and more. I have done some research as to various plans and what is covered, and I would like to pass on that information to you.

VPI Pet Insurance
One insurance provider that I looked in to was VPI Pet Insurance. Both the Standard and Superior Coverage Plans require a $50 deductible per incident. Superior Plan offers the highest reimbursement payouts for eligible veterinary expenses such as accidental injuries, emergencies and illnesses, including cancer. Max's quote was $13 per month.

The Pet WellCare Protection is an additional endorsement on top of your regular plan that covers basic health needs and routine care such as an annual check up, vaccinations, flea/heartworm treatment, and x-rays. Max's quotes were $12/month for $250/year coverage, and $22/month for $400/year coverage.

You can get a quote for your dog online. VPI scored only a 4.2 rating on Pet Insurance Review... so I continued to research.

PetFirst Pet Insurance
Another insurance provider I found was PetFirst. They seemed to get great reviews. They offer both Core and Comprehensive coverage, with plans starting as low as $17 per month, which offers $4,500 in annual coverage, limited to $1,500 per injury. Core coverage includes accident and illness protection

The Comprehensive plan has a Preferred Plus plan at $49 monthly that covers up to $12,000 a year, limited to $3,500 per incident. Comprehensive coverage includes accident, illness and routine care protection.

PetFirst also offers a discount for households with multiple pets. You also save $10 off your first month by applying online. Filing a claim seems easy as it only requires you to fill out a form and send it and the receipts to PetFirst.

PetFirst also requires a $50 deducitble and pays up to 90% of your claim. There are six different policies ranging from $17 - $49 per month. PetFirst got a 9.2 rating at Pet Insurance Review. Sounds like PetFirst is the way to go.

"Living in California, my Mommy and Daddy visit the beach a lot and they always take me! Last weekend we went to Marina Beach. It said no dogs, so I didn't get to frolic in the water but that was okay because I don't like the water too well anyway.

... I love to hear the sound of the waves, but I like chasing the sea gulls even more! When my Grandma and Grandpa were visiting California, we went to John Muir Beach too! It was so cool... we had a picnic and I got to eat lots of yummy food, then I played on the beach with other puppies.

I got sand on my wet nose and it made me sneeze. But it was soooo worth it! I can't wait to go back again!"

Max at Muir Beach, SF, CA

We have taken Max to to several beaches along the California coast, and this is what we thought:

Carmel City Beach - nice, open area, pretty crowded, but no leash required
Carmel Pebble Beach - more secluded and could play off leash and run to the water, but there was a significant amount of seaweed on the beach
Stinson Beach - nice beach, but is always chilly there, be sure to take his sweater; many dog-friendly restaurants in the area
Seaside - Beautiful coast line with walking path near the beach, many dog-friendly restaurants in the area
Muir Beach - beautiful beach with picnic area too; a few other small dogs there; plenty of room to frolic
Half Moon Bay - walked along a guided path near the beach and on trails; nice, but not our favorite
Marina State Beach - saw surfers and dolphins, but dogs aren't allowed on the actual beach, only surrounding area
Monterey State Beach - had fun chasing little squirrels, beautiful beach with small trails off the beach
Fisherman's Wharf at Monterey - very dog friendly, loads of outdoor dining
Fisherman's Wharf at San Francisco - also dog friendly, not as much outdoor dining, a bit more chilly

The Name Game: Choosing a Name for your Dog

Are you getting a new puppy and just can't think of a name? Here are the top 12 male and female dog names of 2007. Max is the top name, so I guess it does make sense that there are three dogs named Max at play group.

Avoiding Puppy Mills

Thinking of buying a puppy? If so, please be aware of the massive puppy mills that are plaguing our nation and destroying the lives of innocent puppies everywhere.

What are puppy mills?
Puppy mills are breeding facilities that breed purebred puppies in large quantities. The puppies are then sold to pet stores, through newspaper advertisements, or online.

Though there are many legitimate breeders, puppy mills often over-breed the dogs, and in some cases, even inbreed. This brings on an array of medical problems for the dogs and puppies.

The cute little puppies are often forced in small cages that are overcrowded. Additionally, there is very little human socialization, which is an important factor in all puppies lives, especially in such tender years.

In order for the breeder to ship out as many puppies and make as much money as possible, the puppies generally receive inappropriate veterinary care. Sometimes, the documentation of vaccines has even been forged. The worst part… unwanted puppies are killed.

How do I avoid purchasing a puppy that was bred in a puppy mill?
Pet stores are often full of puppies from puppy mills. The pet store is out to make money and generally does not care where the puppy came from, but rather is only interested in the largest profit margin. Puppies are merely inventory for the pet store. Unless you make a specific inquiry as to the origin of the puppy and investigate the breeder, a pet store is not the best place to purchase a puppy.

Newspaper and internet advertisements are also venues that generally promote puppy mills. It is easy to see a picture of a cute puppy and fall in love, but what you don't see is the massive overcrowding and poor health care.

Also, consider the alternative of selecting a puppy from your local shelter or purebred rescue group.

When visiting a breeder, how do I know if it is a puppy mill?
Here are some signs that you have found a legitimate breeder:

The puppies are eager to see people and do not shy away
The living area for the puppies and clean and well-kept
Puppies are fed premium dog food
The breeder only breeds a few breeds and knows the breed standards (size, color, temperament)
The breeder encourages you to spend time with the parent of the puppy and multiple visits
The breeder shows you the medical record and explains the vaccinations
The breeder shares potential genetic problems inherent in the breed
The breeder is active with local, state, and national kennel clubs
The breeder provides a written contract and health guaranty and allows you time to read it thoroughly
The breeder offers training tips and provides references of other families who have purchased puppies

Doesn't someone need to rescue the puppies from the mill?
Some may argue that unless the puppies are rescued from the puppy mill, they may be killed; however, it is important to see the big picture.

Unless people stop purchasing puppies from these puppy mills, this will go on forever. If you buy a puppy to try to rescue it, you are actually promoting and supporting the puppy mill and causing the dilemma to continue. Please make an informed decision when you purchase your next puppy!

Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipe

This pumpkin dog treat recipe is a super yummy treat for your pooch and is loaded with Beta carotene and anti-oxidants especially Vitamin C and E. These vitamins help to lower cancer risk, cataracts and heart disease. The pumpkin also aids in digestion.

Ingredients:

2 eggs
1/2 cup canned pumpkin puree
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons dry milk
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon vanilla
water

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Blend eggs and pumpkin together; add salt, cinnamon, dry milk, and flour.
Add vanilla, then add water as needed to make the dough somewhat workable.
The dough should be dry and stiff, don't be concerned with crumbs being left in the bowl.
You will need to mix this with your hands because it is too stiff for an electric mixer.
Roll to 1/2-inch thick.Cut into shapes.
Place 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 20 minutes on one side, then turn over and bake another 20 minutes.

Is there a natural way to rid my dog of fleas?
You can make your own flea spray or use essential oils to repel fleas.

A recipe for a safe and easy homemade flea repellent is: cut 6 lemons in half, boil in a quart of water, steep a few hours, then strain the solution into a spray bottle. Spritz your pet's fur, taking care not to spray near the eyes.

You can also use essential oils to repel fleas, such as:

Lavender, lemongrass, peppermint and citronella repel fleas. Lavender, peppermint and geranium essential oils repel mosquitoes. Lavender, lemongrass and geranium repel ticks. Dab oils between the dog's shoulder blades.
Other effective natural repellents include lemon, cedar, eucalyptus, myrrh, neem and rosewood.
Put a drop of lemon oil or rosemary oil on the dog's collar.

There are vitamins and dietary supplements that will help to repel fleas. Here are some supplements are are known to help:

B complex vitamins (50 mg once a day for cats and smaller dogs, and twice daily for larger dogs

Organic apple cider vinegar to the dog's water bowl (about 1 teaspoon for small dogs and 1 tablespoon for large dogs)

But did you know that these small dark brown insects prefer temperatures of 65-80 degrees and humidity levels of 75-85%... so for some areas of the country they are more than just a “summer” problem. The next few articles will be addressing how to determine if your little guy has fleas and how to deal with it.

How did my dog get fleas?
Dogs and cats can get infested with fleas through contact with other animals or contact with fleas in the environment. Often times, fleas can even live in the grass and can latch on to your pup at play group or even on a walk outside. Fleas can’t fly, but they can jump pretty far!

How do I know if my dog has fleas?
These nasty little bugs can often be seen scurrying along the surface of the skin. Fleas dislike light so looking for them within furry areas and on the pet's belly and inner thighs will provide your best chances of spotting them. Look for "flea dirt", too. "Flea dirt" looks like dark specks of pepper scattered on the skin surface. If you find fleas or flea dirt, you need to begin your war on the pests.

Cain & Able Collection offers a shampoo and conditioner for dogs, formulated from pure organic essential oils, which act a a natural flea treatment, while still keeping the coat smooth and shiny.

We purchased the shampoo because it was advertised to be a gentle shampoo for dogs with sensitive skin. We used both the shampoo and conditioner for several weeks. At first, it seemed like Max was still scratching at his sensitive skin. However, we determined that we were not rinsing the conditioner out completely. After spending a little more time getting the conditioner out, Max was a soft and clean little guy.

Special Rules
Airlines allowing pet travel generally accept most small domesticated pets. Other pets may be accepted with approval. Pets that may travel in the climate-controlled baggage and cargo compartments include: cats, dogs, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot bellied pigs, rabbits, and tropical fish. This step-in dog harness, found at some Petco stores and at Cetacea's online store, is one of the most amazing dog products I have ever come across. I learned about Cetacea and their plethora of dog supplies when I answered an ad for a dog model. After Max modeled we were given the products to try.

The Cetacea step-in harness is so easy to use. Your dog just steps in it and then it fastens on the back. It is a real time saver because you don't have to hassle with trying to stick their head through and then fumble with the fastening device. It is so quick and easy that Max knows to just step right in, and then step out the door.

Not only is it easy to use, but it is made in a way that is comfy for your little guy. All of the seams face out, and not against the dog. Imagine how uncomfortable that would be to have the thick seams constantly rubbing against you. It is easy to adjust sizes, then locks into position.

Halloween Tips & Ideas for your Pup

Costumes:

Be sure to only dress your pup in a costume that he is comfortable wearing. Don't force him to wear that hat he keeps taking off; it is more of a strangling hazard than a fashion statement.

If you want to cut costs this Halloween, try making a costume out of a shirt he already has.

Sew black felt circles on a red shirt to make a lady bug, or
Sew or draw black stripes on a yellow shirt to make a bumble bee... and don't forget the stinger ;)
Draw black rings around a white shirt to make your guy a jail bird
Try making a cape or bandanna from a yard of fabric from your local fabric store. It can easily be tied around the neck or sewn on his collar. Then try penciling on your own logo on the cape... Superdog!

Last year I bought a pair of kids jeans at Goodwill, then cut a 8" portion of the calf area and took out the seam. Then I make holes for the arms and wrote on the denim vest. Add a spike collar that we already owned, and Max was a punk rocker!

Safety:

Be extra careful when answering your door for trick-or-treaters. Don't let your little guy get scared by the ghosts and goblins and run out the door. Always use a leash on Halloween, even if your pup is fully trained. All the spooks may spook him.

Keep all decorations that could of danger to your pet out of his reach. Display lit Jack-o-Lanterns on a table or ledge, and keep all candy out of reach... especially chocolate.

My little Yorkie, Max, is very picky eater. His treat jar is full of half-eaten bags of treats that I have tried to convince him he likes... yet, time after time, he has proven to me that he doesn't.

I picked him up at the groomer and as I was at the register, I gave in, as usual, and purchased a bag of treats off of the display. As much as I hate the give in to the last minute marketing tactics, I found myself hopeful of finding a tasty and healthy treat for my little guy. I bought a bag of Nutro Natural Choice Training Bits. They were on sale from $1.99 to $1.69 (with my PetPerks card) for a 2 oz. bag, and I can't pass up a bargain.

When we got back home, I opened the bag and then Max came running, ears sticking straight up. I made him work for his treats. He sat, rolled, shook paws, then rolled some more. However, I was worried that I could have false hope... either Max was just really hungry, or it was only the initial allure of the newness, as is usually the case.

However, the next day he just gazed at the shiny red bag of treats that was still sitting out. Again, he sat and rolled and loved the treats. Days have gone by and Max is still loving Nutro's Training Bits. They are about 1" square, so I break them into two or three pieces.
